Sofia is the capital and largest city of Bulgaria. It is located in western Bulgaria, at the foot of the mountain range Vitosha. Sofia is one of the oldest capital cities in Europe, with its history dating back to the 8th century BC, when Thracians established a settlement there.
Historic landmarks include the 10th century Boyana Church which is a UNESCO World Heritage protected site, the Alexander Nevski Cathedral (one of the world's largest Orthodox churches), and the early Byzantine Church of St Sophia. More modern architecture is represented by the Bulgarian National Opera and Ballet, the Ivan Vazov National Theatre, the Rakovski Str theatre district, Slaveykov Square's outdoor book market, and the NDK, which is Southeastern Europe’s largest cultural and congressional centre. There are also numerous museums including the National Historical Museum, the Bulgarian Natural History Museum, the Museum of Earth and Men, the National Museum of Military History and the National Archaeological Museum. Sofia currently enjoys a booming film industry as the filming ground of several international film productions. Vitosha Boulevard is home to numerous fashion boutiques and luxury goods stores and features exhibitions by world fashion designers. Sofia's location, situated in the foothills of the Vitosha mountain, further adds to the city's lively atmosphere. The city has also a huge nightlife scene with many different night clubs, live venues, pubs, mehani (Bulgarian traditional taverns), and some superb restaurants.

THE MONASTERY complex enjoys an enviable location for all these attractions.  It is only a short taxi ride away from the airport and also very close to downtown Sofia where you will find those very good restaurants, night clubs and bars. New shopping malls boast designer shops, bowling alleys and IMAX cinemas (Films in English with Bulgarian subtitles). Sofia also has some very fashionable European shops as well as traditional Bulgarian market halls.

Also, close to Monastery, there are some supermarkets and the village with its own little shops and bars and hotel restaurants. There is a very good hotel only recently opened in the village which offers exceptionally good dining. Horseriding is also available from the stables right beside the cable car station - only metres from the apartment. The owner speaks very good English and beginners are catered for as well as accomplished riders.

However the biggest attraction in the vicinity is MOUNT VITOSHA. Vitosha is a National Nature Park and is a joy to visit both in summer and in winter. In winter  it is ideal for ski-ing and snowboarding. Activities in summer include walking amongst the many nature trails or mountain biking and climbing.
